Fold, Staple, Riot: The Art and Subculture of Zine Making
Herron School of Art and Design
June 14 - July 15, 2017
Fold, Staple, Riot: The Art and Subculture of Zine Making, is an exhibition of artwork created for zines and small-print publications. Zines are typically small circulation, noncommercial publications often produced in editions of fewer than 100. While the history of zines dates back to the advent of the printing press, every technological advancement–from the Xerox machine to the internet–has offered new possibilities to those seeking to explore print media.
The autonomous nature of zines provides an outlet for personal expression to those that feel ignored by the mainstream media. They are a useful instrument in challenging current notions of creative success and bridge the exchange of personal, cultural, and political concerns. This exhibition aims to highlight the diversity of voices within the culture and its local history as well as inspiring a new audience of zine makers.
